gift cards: the ultimate waste of money

June 29, 2008

almost a year ago I got $100 in best buy gift cards for doing “normal work” to my mom’s friend’s computer.. it was really nothing and I insisted on getting nothing, but being the older asians that they are, got me that.

I spent about $25 on Orange Box on Black Friday, which I barely even play. I kinda just had to buy it. and I still have the rest.

that money is really going to waste. it could’ve been cash collecting interest in a bank, but no, it just has to be this stupid card. and there are no MSI Winds or good obtainable HDTV deals, so I probably won’t be using it for a while.

.. it probably would have done me better if I had spent it on something useless, sold it, and put the cash in the bank to gain interest.

….. oh well.

APM karma

June 27, 2008

well I’m pretty much known (to myself, anyways) for being able to navigate around my computer and just do things as fast as possible. type fast, click fast, move my mouse quickly and accurately to click exactly where i want to as fast as possible, etc.. and that just reminded me of having “APM using the computer” just like APM in starcraft, haha. well, anyways.. karma finally got me.

i was thinking and clicking so fast that I ended up deleting my Downloads folder instead of sharing it.
… yeah, I know.

I don’t ever use my recycle bin (actually delete on delete – otherwise I’d be using shift+delete all the time).. so it’s quite interesting that something like this, happens to someone like ME. finally.

anyhow, i’m fortunate that that was one of my less-important folders. actually, a lot less important, and I have a backup from spring break. (I just can’t find the hard drive. lol.)  but I’m using GetDataBack NTFS (screw Ontrack EasyRecovery, that thing sucks) and … getting my data back.

update: well I thought I deleted it. I was thinking even faster than I thought. turns out I hid the folder.. hah. I knew something was wrong. It wouldn’t have deleted in 1 second (more like 3) and it would’ve prompted confirmation for executable files and read-only files. I actually did use OnTrack EasyRecovery Pro, but I used “Advanced Recovery” instead of “Deleted File Recovery” (…. wtf) and it found everything. I recovered it and moved it back to my drive.. only to find out that the folder was already there, just.. hidden.

wow. I am really losing it.

weirdest thing ever?

June 24, 2008

sometimes my computer freezes, and sometimes (once a month?) i have to just force it to shut off. and usually nothing happens, although an “unclean” shutdown (and unsaved settings – not that there are any to save, at this point) are a bit uncomforting.

but this time, when i started back up, a bunch of programs lost their settings. WhatPulse broke, and I had to delete the tempfile. A bunch of CS/Steam configs broke. Local Digsby settings broke. SpeedFan settings were lost. Every Ventrilo setting and profile/server was lost. that’s all I can remember, but pretty much.. a bunch of random things lost all their settings. and I have no idea why it would’ve happened this time, but oh well.

just .. weird.

random offering

June 23, 2008

Agilent randomly contacted me today for an engineering co-op. co-ops are 6 months (basically 2 quarters) long and I had the choice of summer+fall or fall+winter. I want to be at home over the summer, and fortunately they are located in Santa Clara on Stevens Creek Blvd, so I opted for summer+fall. I would be developing software to test circuit boards in terms of circuitry and environment. interview is on Friday.

the bad part is that it will basically turn all the planning that I had for the next 12 months to waste:

  • school: no 329 till Spring and no capstone until 5th year, which means I’ll stay until Spring 2010.. and take like 2-3 classes a quarter (a bit more if I take some extra CSCs to go for grad school/Master’s.)
  • graduation: lol. tech elective form and graduation evaluation gone to waste.
  • housing: oh good lord I’ll have to recalculate / replan everything and whatnot
  • this summer: might overstretch myself.. 2 GEs, running, CCNA, perl, C#, python? dramas D:?
  • ****: !@*&%!@#%*&@#&%*!

but hey, it’s a chance in a lifetime, one that I have to take at this point.

DD-WRT on AirLink AR430W troubles

June 22, 2008

a long time ago Fry’s had the Airlink AR430W for $10. I thought it was trash, but I found out a few months later that people have been able to get DD-WRT onto it. back then it was with DD-WRT v24 RC5, and now I’m trying it with the finalized v24.

it pretty much has to be done from a linux machine – I used Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). and these instructions: http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=182563

packages: putty, tftp, tftpd, xinetd.
putty inserts the proper ^C as you need it within a certain time window to get to the redboot prompt on the router.

it was a bit confusing to me what they meant by

4. Create the directory /tftpboot.
a. sudo mkdir /tftproot

as far as I knew, I just created both directories (using sudo of course) and downloaded the files into /tftpboot because that was the directory specified within /etc/xinetd.d/tftp.

after doing the next few steps i configured the ethernet interface:

sudo ifconfig 192.168.20.80 up

and started pinging the router (even though it is off):

ping 192.168.20.81

and had the putty telnet session ready to hit enter:

putty –P 9000 –telnet 192.168.20.81

while holding the reset button I powered on the router and the destination host was unreachable (unconnected network end), but it returned a single packet before timing out again. i tried several times and failed to start the telnet session in that miniscule timing window, before I let it sit there and pondered why it was so difficult.

“ping: sendmsg: Network is unreachable” (yay for proper use of perror) for several more packets – at least 20-30. then it started returning successful pings and I realized that the device was still booting up, and has boot up. at that point I entered the putty command and got into redboot.

i proceeded to enter load ap61.ram but got an error:

RedBoot> load ap61.ram
Using default protocol (TFTP)
__udp_sendto: Can't find address of server
Can't load 'ap61.ram': some sort of network error

after several (5-8) attempts of doing that same thing, and quitting for a few days (headache #1!), I realized that I was losing my static IP somehow during the process. I re-ran the ifconfig command and attempted to load ap61.ram again, only to get a different error message:

RedBoot> load ap61.ram
Using default protocol (TFTP)
TFTP timed out 1/15
TFTP timed out 2/15
Entry point: 0x800410bc, address range: 0x80041000-0x800680d8

and that began headache #2.

following directions isn’t working, and making slight alterations given these error messages isn’t helping either. this is taking a lot longer than i expected it to, but the more problems I run into, the more I get out of it. I shall update later on progress!

fall 2008 thus far

June 21, 2008

the original plan was CPE 350, CPE 329, STAT 350, and EE 403/443, but I can’t have stat (only 2 MTWR sections, 3-4 and 4-5, time conflicts), which is a pre-requisite (err, “pre-requisite”.. i’d have to say that at least 50% of “prerequisites” are absolutely useless) for CPE 464 (Networks) and 465 (Advanced Networks).

I have no choice; I’m just going to have to get into that class without stat. I pray to God that he lets me in, or I’m screwed forever and ever. (Once again we lean towards the disgusting extension of graduation…)

so… networks without stat, algorithms concurrently with [a different] stat, and.. intro to materials engineering, without chem. YES, my last three abuses of pre-req skipping for EVER! and I’ll be able to achieve my goal of having graduated college without taking freshman level chem yet, which I would take right after. :D

that’s 3 times in the future.. my past abuses: tech writing (lol), circuits 2 (lol), semiconductor device electronics.. that’s it. haha, doesn’t seem like much.

omg it is over (lots of crap within)

June 14, 2008

as if school itself isn’t enough.. hell, as if half of my 4 classes and 2 labs weren’t enough (seriously, half of that is enough…)

finals were pretty anticlimactic.

  • I got 3 hours of sleep or so last Thursday.. didn’t expect prelab for 347 exp9 to be like.. that much work.. holy moly. barely functioned that Thursday and had a lab final..
  • 375 final was cake, but i fucked up calibrating the network analyzer with the given equipment. after managing through the quarter doing the same thing over and over, for some reason on the final i couldn’t get the SMA to BNC to RG-8U shit to work.. i swear something was missing. anyways I just did everything I needed to do, but with a bad calibration, giving me inaccurate numbers. i would’ve redone calibration (I even figured out what I needed to do) but there was no time left. she still gave me most of the credit for doing the calculations properly.
  • should’ve went straight to studying for finals but was wiped. really wiped. so I started studying for 453 (lol LAST final) on Saturday, and finished mid-Sunday. used the rest of Sun, Mon, and Tue to really get 228.
  • 228 final was alright. 3 cake, 1 alright, and 2 difficult problems. i’m pretty sure I passed. (bad thing to say, really.)
  • after 228, straight to studying for 307 because that’s all that was left to study for. grinded everything down, down to.. multivibrators. damn those things; we barely did anything at all with them so most people barely understood anything.. and I spent my study breaks packing up.
  • 307 final was alright, 453 final was.. easy. I started losing it near the end, and realized I really had to finish up and go. it was.. well, I didn’t feel that it was over. but hell, I jumped for joy anyways.
  • ate lunch and dinner on campus 4 times with Annie’s meals (superthanks) and ate a bunch of crap and frozen pizza and more crap all week. my stomach’s homeostasis got pretty messed up and I’m glad to be home.

so after all that jazz I got out at 2:30 and felt like I really needed to leave by 3:30 to make it home on time for Piedmont’s graduation. needless to say I called up Peter and got all my shit in his car, and brought it over to Jeff and Cynthia’s place.. while they were taking the modern physics final. and.. made an assload of trips back and forth with really heavy shit. it was brutal. really brutal. I ended up leaving their place at like.. 4, waiting for them. fuck fuck fuck.. right?

so i’m ready to go, but Munjal is lagging, and we leave at 5:10 or so. I had given up. all that effort put into trying to make it home just .. kinda got stalled by other people. so many fucking things already pissed me off – and people know that I rarely ever get mad. and when/if I do, I am really fucking mad. but I put it off anyways. =D

I brought a couple things home but Munjal’s van was full for the most part. and I wasn’t really obligated to go home anymore at that point, since I got shafted, but I did anyways. and ate dinner with peeps that were there, and hung out for a bit. and.. got only a couple hours of shoddy sleep.

.. and.. left back for SLO at 8 in the morning. 8:30 cause it only really takes 2.5 hours to get there, not 3. it took 2:36. drove the whole way fine with music, although I forgot to charge my mp3 player and brought my charger. was a little tired at the end but okay. needed to get more things together to bring to Cynthia’s place by 12 when her checkout was 12:45 or so. I ended up finishing around 12:15 but they didn’t even get checked out till 1:15 thanks to their lagging RA. so I abused that and brought more things that I forgot. haha. then i just chilled and talked to them until they could get checked out, since they had nothing else to do. I pretty much had Jamba Juice for lunch – just kept drinking and drinking. it’s so good when it’s hot and you’ve been moving.. ..yeah.

finished up more things at the apartment.. and more and more. clean clean clean, pack pack pack, move move move. random stuff like moving Wilson’s bike to Peter’s place (and almost tripping over it), figuring out wtf to throw away.. yaddy ya blah blah blah.

finally checked out around 3 something, headed over to Backstage .. which was closed at 2, great.. more tired walking and headed over to campus market, which was deserted. apparently they offered me free pastries, which was a great “lunch” and I spent the rest of the money on a gallon of water which I actually needed. headed home with a gas break at Gilroy and made it back home in 2:38 of driving time. about 29 MPG on the 1994 taurus for the trip.. damn, I think I’m pretty good.

very very tired legs and arms. moving, driving, moving, driving, moving.. driving.. dying.. haha

the MSI Wind is coming out soon – and my mom actually told me to buy a laptop. so I won’t feel bad for shelling out the 400 bucks without an internship.. woot!

.. too bad 95% of internships are BS anyways. it’s great how companies look for “experience” — which is the doing of nothing. on that note..

right when i got home today, I planned on making a “more permanent” connection to my neighbor’s open network .. for a day and a half until I get Comcast installed Monday morning. I ran into some really weird ethernet issues where my Netgear ME101 would connect to this computer but not those.. and i thought those network cards died or something, but didn’t. just another huge complicated mess like everything else I run into. so I decided to attempt DD-WRT flashing the Airlink AR430W early (too early really, I was still tired from driving.) until Ubuntu decided to be a bitch and list “NETGEAR” as 1 entry even though there were 3 access points with the same name. at that point I just decided that this temporary setup will do for .. the day.

lots of weird things have been going on…. yeah. i shall spend this summer taking some more random crap classes, studying for my Cisco CCNA since I have nothing else to do, figuring out wtf I am doing for my senior project (and possibly doing it), playing with DD-WRT on a router, playing with Comcast 1mbps upload.. haha. oh yeah, and probably running and tennis.. I swear! God forbid I “waste” time watching kdramas.. man they’re all downloaded and waiting and yet I still feel like I need to do better things (umm.. engineer things and shit, yo.) with my time.

and I believe that’s all that needs to be said for this epic closure of the school year entry.

well

June 5, 2008

not much work this week. i gotta admit i slacked fri-tues considering all i did over that time was like, 1/3 of my ee prelab.. which was probably the biggest and hardest prelab possible. needed to relax a bit, but maybe that was too much. should’ve studied for CPE 453, hahah.

CPE banquet is friday night – if I get a summer internship (.. in San Jose. ugh, I just had to say that.) on the spot, I would be.. well, amazed. I get to sit next to “Second Sight” (a medical devices company in Sylmar, like Wilson’s St. Jude Medical) while Austin gets to sit with Lockheed Martin >_> not cool.

after this lab report, all the work is done. now it’s just finals.. what’s sad is, I think that my hardest section of the quarter was probably Braun’s EE 347 lab. yes, it is a lab. and it is 1 unit. lol.

i somehow managed to get sick again yesterday or so.. hopefully I can phase it out. it’s not too bad, just a minor annoyance. t’was a struggle to “do” the prelab yesterday and the lab today though.

life feels a little weird, but oh well.

soo.. next fall, stat350 time-conflicts with my cpe350+cpe329+ee403/443 schedule. can’t have it all.. and in winter, cpe464’s 3-hour lab conflicts with cpe450. oh gosh. if things don’t change soon then I might just be forced to cave in to graduating later.. and if I stay for another full year, I’m going to take 5-6 extra CSC classes and go after a CSC master’s. (I really like coding and development disciplines a lot more than.. well.. anything.) but if I take those and don’t get a 3.25 or don’t get in, haha, I waste effort. 213 engineering units in 4 years is pretty impressive though, i must admit. 225 over 5 years – not so much. we’ll see what summer has to bring.

I am weird as hell, but hey, that’s me. there are some quirks about me that reallllllly need to be fixed, though.

almost there

June 2, 2008

weeks 7-9 were 3 weeks of hell, albeit not excessively straining. it just built up and up and exploded on Tuesday with the electronics project and then “settled down” with the 335 AND 453 midterms hahahaha… jeez.

all that’s up for this week is .. a lab final and LAST 347 BRAUN LAB OMFG. then it’s finals.. better relax a little bit and get studying extra early.

if it weren’t for annie and peter, i’d probably go crazy right about now. also thanks to annie mucho and austin a bit for feeding my hungry hungry tummy every so often lately :D

housing plans – 1 out, Austin and friends in.. hahaha. god, next year’s going to drive me crazy.
summer plans – don’t quite know.
